GC 500 Tunnel

The Government is putting out to tender the drafting of the GC-500 tunnel project
The infrastructure will restore traffic between Taurito and Playa de Mogán
The Ministry of Public Works and Transport of the Government of the Canary Islands has initiated the contract for the drafting service of the construction project of a tunnel at kilometre 44 + 000 of the GC-500 road, in the section between Taurito and the Puerto de Mogán. The budget for technical assistance for the drafting of the project is 211,457, 21 euros.

The vice president and councillor of the area, Pablo Rodríguez, stressed yesterday that “this work is essential to restore as soon as possible the traffic on the GC-500 that was affected by the heavy rainfall of last September, the only road through the that certain vehicles can circulate to move between the nuclei of Taurito and Puerto de Mogán “.
In this sense, the counsellor explained that this project responds to the study of alternatives made by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria that detected that if the GC-500 were to be opened, there were serious risks of landslides. And he pointed out that the work “responds to the involvement of the three administrations, Cabildo, Mogán City Council and the Canary Islands Government, which made the decision to seek an alternative to solve this problem, which involves the construction of a tunnel to save the area in which landslides have occurred, to be able to restore traffic through the GC-500 “.

The counsellor explained that the future tunnel will be about 250 meters long, two lanes of 3.5 meters, shoulders of 1.5 meters, sidewalks, and all the facilities required by current regulations.

The GC-500 road, a conventional road, was closed to traffic on September 22, 2017 due to a series of landslides at kilometre 44 + 000. The cut of that section was accompanied by the loss of connectivity between Puerto de Mogán and Taurito. Therefore, motorists who had to move between cores have to do it on the GC-1 highway. Thus, a journey that was about 3.5 kilometres by the GC-500 happened to become more than 14 kilometres by the GC-1. The closure of the section also forced to restrict the circulation of the GC-500 of bicycles, mopeds, vehicles for people with reduced mobility and vehicles with animal traction.
